Real Madrid forward Endrick has suffered a recurrence of the hamstring injury he has been nursing for two months. It has increased speculation over his future at the club.

The 18-year-old had been working his way back from the injury he sustained in Madrid’s final La Liga fixture last season, a 2-0 win over Sevilla. After undergoing initial rehabilitation in Spain, Endrick travelled to the United States last month to continue his recovery alongside the Real Madrid squad during the Club World Cup.

Despite being ruled out of the tournament from the outset, Endrick had stepped up his involvement in training and participated in parts of Monday’s session ahead of Madrid’s semifinal loss to Paris Saint-Germain. The signs at that point suggested he was nearing full fitness.

However, the teenager has now suffered a setback that will keep him sidelined for several more weeks. The exact timeframe for his return has not been disclosed, but it is understood he will not feature in Madrid’s early league fixtures and may stay out until September.

The timing of the relapse is particularly damaging for Endrick, who had hoped to make an impression on new head coach Xabi Alonso ahead of the new campaign. Making matters worse is the rise of fellow forward Gonzalo Garcia, whose performances during the Club World Cup have increased his standing within the squad hierarchy. The 21-year-old scored four goals in six matches in Madrid’s Stateside campaign.

Since Alonso’s side are not short of attacking depth, loan options for Endrick may be under consideration, although people close to the player have said he wants to stay and fight for a place at Madrid.
