The veteran defender returns to the squad following a nine-month absence due to injury

Dani Carvajal says he’s willing to play “even in-between the posts” after returning from a long-term injury and waiting for his first appearance under new manager Xabi Alonso.

The 33-year-old right-back resumed full training this month after recovering from an ACL injury sustained in October. He said he loves Alonso’s tactical setup and is eager to make himself available in any role.

“The coach is adding a real layer of versatility,” said Carvajal. “We’ve seen players like Tchouameni adapting seamlessly.

“As for me, I’ll play anywhere, even in-between the posts. I’ve played at centre-back, left-back, on the wing. I’m always ready for anything the coach asks of me. I’m available to help out in any way I can.”

Carvajal could compete with Madrid’s new signing Trent Alexander-Arnold, who Alonso lately deployed at wing-back. The new coach switched from a traditional back four to his more familiar three-man defence in the club’s last group game against RB Salzburg. It paid dividends as Madrid secured a composed 3-0 win.

Carvajal, who has now spent over a decade with the club, believes the team is gaining rhythm at the right time, even as he works to shake off rust from his nine-month absence.

“Physically, I feel great,” said the veteran defender. “I’ve only been back with the group for a couple of weeks so I’m still lacking that match sharpness, but mentally I’m ready. If the coach calls on me, I’ll step in with full commitment and zero hesitation.”

Madrid enter Tuesday’s round-of-16 fixture against Juventus as favourites, but Carvajal is under no illusions about the challenge the Italian side pose.

“The team is gaining in confidence and tomorrow’s opposition will be stronger than what we’ve come up against in the tournament so far,” said Carvajal.

“It’s tougher opposition and it’s knockout. I can’t wait. Lose, and you’re heading home. We have to go all out. I hope we can book a place in the quarters.”
