Uefa says court ruling in favour of Madrid in no way validates the idea of a Super League competition

Real Madrid have announced plans to pursue compensation from Uefa after the Regional Court of Madrid dismissed appeals from Uefa, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and La Liga in relation to the Super League.

The decision is the latest development in a legal battle dating back to 2021, when Madrid were among 12 elite clubs that tried to launch the breakaway European Super League competition.

The project quickly collapsed due to widespread backlash but Madrid, and to some extent Barcelona, have continued to challenge Uefa’s control over European football governance.

In a statement on Wednesday, Madrid said the court’s ruling confirmed Uefa had breached EU competition law by acting to block the creation of the Super League.

“Real Madrid welcomes the decision by the Regional Court of Madrid to dismiss the appeals lodged by Uefa, the RFEF and La Liga, confirming that Uefa, in the matter of the Super League, seriously infringed European Union competition rules in line with the CJEU ruling, abusing its dominant position,” the club said.

“This judgment paves the way for substantial claims to compensate for the damages suffered by the club.”

Madrid added that it had been in discussions with Uefa this year to implement necessary reforms but talks had failed to reach an agreement.

The club said it was concerned about financial sustainability, transparency, player welfare and fan access to matches.

However, Uefa said the ruling was in no way an approval of the Super League.

The governing body said: “This ruling does not validate the abandoned ‘Super League’ project announced in 2021, nor does it undermine Uefa’s current authorisation rules, adopted in 2022 and updated in 2024, which remain fully in force.”
