Latest injury setback follows a similar issue that saw the defender spend a month on the sidelines
Real Madrid are awaiting medical updates on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injury, but there is some concern he could be out for a long spell.
The England international was forced off in the 55th minute of Wednesday’s 3-0 victory over Athletic Club, with what seemed to be a muscular problem.
Alexander-Arnold assisted Kylian Mbappe’s seventh-minute opener before creating the chance for Madrid’s second with a delicious cross that Mbappe headed across goal to Eduardo Camavinga. Alexander-Arnold was later replaced by Raul Asencio.
The former Liverpool defender is expected to undergo tests this week to determine the extent of the problem, but sources close to the club said there are fears he could be out for an extended spell again.
Alexander-Arnold’s first season in Spain has been repeatedly interrupted by fitness issues. He had only just returned to the lineup after being out for a month with a hamstring injury suffered in September.
Fellow right-back Dani Carvajal also suffered an injury in the same period, forcing Federico Valverde to fill in at right-back. Carvajal himself returned in October and played in the clásico before sustaining another problem that required surgery. He is now out until 2026.
There was further concern for Madrid on Wednesday night as Eduardo Camavinga was also withdrawn with an ankle problem. But the issue is thought to be minor and the club are less worried about his availability.
