Manager’s position could come under serious threat were Madrid to lose next game against Manchester City
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez met with senior figures on Monday to discuss Xabi Alonso’s position as head coach, after the club lost 2-0 at home to Celta Vigo on Sunday.
Madrid have only won one league game in their last five, and the defeat to Celta is to be followed by a Champions League meeting with Manchester City this week.
Alonso’s side are fifth in the Champions League table and only Arsenal have more points than them, but Alonso’s position could come under serious threat were Madrid to lose that game, according to The Athletic.
The loss to Celta was concerning particularly for what it represented. It was another setback after a convincing midweek win away at Athletic Club, opened up a four-point gap between them and Barcelona, and raised questions about whether they are unable to turn games around if they fall behind first.
There are also concerns about whether Alonso is unable to manage the dressing room effectively, especially in light of the recent standoff with Vinicius Junior regarding his contract.
According to ESPN, the board has already started assessing alternatives should results fail to improve. Former manager Zinedine Zidane is among the names being discussed.
The club’s senior figures reportedly discussed the poor results, but also the issue of Vinicius’s contract and the recent form of key players such as Jude Bellingham and Fede Valverde.
