RB Leipzig’s 2024-25 Bundesliga season has come to an end, and it’s not the conclusion the team had hoped for.

A 3-2 home defeat to Stuttgart sealed a seventh-place finish, meaning Leipzig will miss out on European competition for the first time since their promotion to the top flight in 2016. This marks a significant downturn for a team that has consistently competed at the highest level in recent years.

The disappointment is palpable, with sporting director Marcel Schafer bluntly stating that the season was a letdown for the players, team, and club. Leipzig had set their sights on achieving European qualification, but ultimately fell short. Schafer emphasized the need for open discussions with players and hinted at the necessity of squad reinforcements to address the team’s shortcomings.

This season’s outcome is a let down from Leipzig’s usual standards. Since 2017, the team has participated in European competition every year, even reaching the Champions League semi-finals in 2020. This absence from Europe is a big hit to the club.

The club’s leadership, including Jurgen Klopp who works in a post-managerial role under the Red Bull banner, will play a crucial role in guiding Leipzig back on track.

As Leipzig looks to the future, the team will be undergoing significant changes. The club is searching for a new permanent head coach, with potential candidates including Sebastian Hoeneß, Roger Schmidt, and Oliver Glasner. Additionally, Leipzig may face the challenge of losing key players Xavi Simons and Benjamin Sesko, who are reportedly set to depart the club ahead of next season.

With a new coach and potential squad reinforcements, Leipzig aims to regroup and return to European competition stronger than ever. The summer transfer window will be crucial in shaping the team’s future and determining their ability to bounce back from this disappointing season.
