RB Leipzig’s sporting director Marcel Schafer confirms ongoing talks with Chelsea about signing Xavi Simons, with the player keen on leaving Leipzig this summer.

RB Leipzig’s sporting director Marcel Schafer has confirmed that the club is in talks with Chelsea over a potential transfer for Xavi Simons.

Simons, who played the full 90 minutes in Leipzig’s 6-0 defeat to Bayern Munich, is reportedly keen on leaving the club this summer.

Chelsea are leading the charge, with negotiations between the two clubs progressing well.

According to Schafer, Leipzig makes decisions based on sporting and financial considerations, which is why Simons remains part of the team for now. However, Schafer acknowledged that the transfer market is still open, and nothing is certain. “As of today, Xavi will stay with us,” Schafer said. “The transfer market is still open. You never know what’ll happen.”

Simons’ ambitions to leave Leipzig are no secret, and he has reportedly told the club about his desire to move on. Schafer confirmed that there have been exchanges between Leipzig and Chelsea in recent weeks, but no agreement has been reached yet. The talks are ongoing, and Leipzig is looking for a package worth around €65-70 million for Simons.

Simons, a 22-year-old Dutch international, has been an impressive player for Leipzig, scoring 11 goals and providing 8 assists last season. Chelsea sees him as an ideal attacking addition, capable of playing across the front line or as a number 10 in Enzo Maresca’s system.
