Brailsford is set to return to his original role as director of sport at INEOS, pulling back from his high-profile involvement at Old Trafford
Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has implemented a boardroom shake-up that will see Sir Dave Brailsford step back from his role at the helm of football operations.
The move signals a reorganisation of the leadership circle after United’s worst Premier League campaign in the modern era.
Brailsford is set to return to his original role as director of sport at INEOS, pulling back from his high-profile involvement at Old Trafford, according to the Times. The 61-year-old had initially left his position with the INEOS Grenadiers cycling team to focus on United following Ratcliffe’s minority takeover and assumption of football control in February 2024.
For over a year, Brailsford has been the architect of many key changes at United since the takeover but results on the pitch have not followed suit.
United finished a dismal 15th in the league and compounded their misery with a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham, missing out on European qualification altogether.
Despite the poor season, Ratcliffe has publicly praised Brailsford’s role in modernising the club’s performance infrastructure behind the scenes. Brailsford will now resume oversight of INEOS’ sporting portfolio, including continued involvement with Ligue 1 club Nice.
It is unclear if Ratcliffe still intends to appoint another overseer of football operations at United or if he’ll simply reassign Brailsford’s responsibilities to other top figures.
Meanwhile, the club are not standing still on recruitment. United have already completed the signing of forward Matheus Cunha from Wolves and are reportedly pursuing Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, who is said to be open to the move.
