Club have managed just one win in their opening four league matches
Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is working with Ruben Amorim to address issues facing the manager at the club.
Ratcliffe visited Manchester United’s training base on Thursday for discussions with Amorim as pressure builds on the Portuguese after a difficult start to the season.
United have managed just one win in their opening four league matches after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad last weekend. It leaves them in 14th place, close to the remarkably low 15th place they finished in last season.
Amorim, who was appointed last autumn after Erik ten Hag’s dismissal, has struggled to impose any kind of observable progress, and his insistence on sticking to his preferred 3-4-3 formation has drawn criticism.
Ratcliffe is seeking clarity on how the head coach can reverse their current slide. The club made more than £200m worth of investment on the squad this summer, but the team still feels mismatched.
Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha are all widely regarded as talented players, but Amorim’s system has worsened long-standing midfield issues at the club, not helped by the absence of any reinforcements there whatsoever, or his decision to play attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes as one of two central midfielders.
United face Chelsea at home this weekend and a negative result will increase the pressure on Amorim. Ratcliffe has previously expressed his admiration for the Portuguese, the first permanent managerial appointment under his tenure as co-owner, but it is unclear how he and the club hierarchy will react if results do not improve.
