Premier League legend and pundit Roy Keane has delivered a crucial message to team captain Bruno Fernandes and the rest of the Manchester United squad.
Keane was speaking after United’s hapless second half display against Newcastle on Sunday that eventually saw them concede three goals to end the game with a 4-1 loss.
Bruno Fernandes, as team captain, came out to speak on behalf of the squad and try to restore some confidence as he has done so many times this season. Keane acknowledges Bruno’s efforts as team captain and United’s best player, but has told the United player that his best work needs to be within the group to get them setting standards for one another.
“He’s talking about his team, stirring belief and all that, but what about his right back [Dalot] who didn’t put a leg or try and tackle for the goal?
“I hope he’s pulling him in the dressing room, because he keeps talking about belief or my teammates and all that. A really good teammate puts demands on each other – whether that’s on the pitch, or in the dressing room, or on the training ground during the week.”
Keane also acknowledged that Bruno Fernandes has been getting no help in the United midfield, with the Portuguese expected to carry the team on his shoulders and deliver week in week out.
“That’s unfair on him,” said Keane, “because when you’re playing for a big club like Man United you need a helping hand.”
The former Manchester United captain said that he fully expects his old club to beat Lyon at home on Thursday. Lyon are fourth in the French League after beating Auxerre 3-1 away on Sunday.
The Europa League is United and Amorim’s chance to salvage their season. Winning the competition would see United secure a spot in the Champions League next season, which would be vital not only to attract talent but also to generate revenue for transfers.
