Richard Masters says the league’s role ends once charges are filed, and there is nothing else to do but be patient

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters says the league has no control over the timeline for a verdict in Manchester City’s long-running case.

City were charged in 2023 with multiple alleged breaches of financial fair play regulations spanning 2009 to 2018, as well as failing to co-operate with the league’s investigation.

The Premier League’s initial statement listed 115 alleged breaches, though the total number is understood to be higher. The club, who won three league titles in that period, deny all wrongdoing.

A 12-week private hearing took place between September and December last year, but no ruling has been issued by the independent panel overseeing the case. With the 2025-26 season just days away, there is still no indication of when a decision will be made.

Masters told Sky Sports the Premier League’s role ends once charges are filed, and there is nothing else to do but be patient.

“Once the allegations and charges have been put forward, they go before an independent panel which is independently selected,” said Masters. “And they are then in charge of the process and its timings.

“They hear the case. They decide the outcome. We have no influence over that or its timing.

“And that’s right from an independent point of view, you have independent people making those decisions. We just have to wait.”
