Spurs have lost their 18th match of the season, with only the three sides in the relegation zone losing more
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has expressed his disappointment at the 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest on Monday night.
Spurs started the game poorly and went down 2-0 after Elliot Anderson and Chris Wood scored for the visitors. Posteclogou’s side rose from their slumber afterwards and pressed Forest for much of the game.
Although Richarlison scored a late goal to halve the deficit, it was ultimately not enough as Tottenham were handed their 18th defeat of the season in the Premier League. Only three sides have lost more so far – and they are all getting relegated.
Postecoglou told reporters after the match that it was “a shame” because the team played very well, had a lion’s share of the possession and “deserved to win the game”.
“It’s another game we have lost where we shouldn’t lose, and it’s been a big part of our season in that we are just making things really difficult for ourselves in key moments,” he said.
“Giving away poor goals. It’s a shame because our football was outstanding and we totally dominated the game. Even with the two goals we conceded I still feel like we deserved to win the game. At the same time it’s another loss and another unacceptable loss.
“For us it’s just been a season where at times, even with the challenges we have had, it’s really frustrating because our football was so good. We have lost another game.”
Many Tottenham fans have criticised Postecoglou, first for his gung-ho approach in attack that costs the team defensively, and then now purely for the team’s remarkable pile of defeats.
“I don’t need to say anything to the fans. The fans are disappointed and angry as we are as well,” said the Australian.
“The fans clearly wouldn’t be happy with our results but neither am I or the players. From our perspective, it’s something we need to accept responsibility that we have fallen short of the standards we need to have.
“The flip side of that is that the frustrating bit is it’s not because of the way we are playing because our football today was very similar to the Frankfurt game at home which was another game we should have won.”
