Poor Manchester United Performance Not Down to 3-4-3 System, Amorim Says

Manager says his side must focus on improving details of their game rather than on system change

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has defended his system once again, insisting the team’s poor results are not down to his 3-4-3 formation.

The Portuguese coach is under growing pressure ahead of Saturday’s home game against Sunderland, with United having managed just nine wins from 33 Premier League fixtures since his arrival from Sporting.

They have also lost three of their six league games so far, despite playing once a week, and been humiliated against League Two side Grimsby.

Last weekend’s 3-1 defeat at Brentford sparked renewed criticism of his system, with several pundits calling for his sack. But Amorim was defiant

“If we lost to Arsenal because of the system, it is your job [the media] to make the opinion,” said Amorim.

“When you look at the game against [Manchester] City, is the first thing you think when the game starts the system? I think you don’t think about the system in that moment.

“And Brentford, the way we concede goals, the way we create chances, there is nothing to do with the system. That is my opinion.

“I am not saying this team would play better in a different system or not, that is not my point.

“My point is, if I look at the games we didn’t win, the most important thing when I watch the game is not that we lost because of the system. That is my opinion and people have different opinions. That is OK.”

United’s head coach added that despite using the same 3-4-3 formation, his tactical approach to each game this season has been different, rejecting ideas his team have been playing the same way.

“I can look at the games this season, for me they are completely different. In the other games we are not the same team in some details.

“During these six games during this season, we are not always the same team in small things, more in the way we play. It is not the same in different matches.”
