Manager Diego Simeone wants player to stay at Atletico “for many years to come”

Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez has said he is not bothered by speculation linking him with a move to Barcelona.

The 25-year-old has scored 36 goals in 65 appearances since joining Atletico for €95m in the summer of 2024, marking himself as one of the most impressive forwards in Europe. That form has fuelled talk of replacing the ageing Robert Lewandowski in Catalonia.

“Look, I’m very calm about it all,” said Alvarez, who scored a brace to help Atletico crush Real Madrid in the Madrid derby last week.

“People always talk. Last year, there was a lot of talk as well, but the season is just starting and my focus is on getting better every day, doing my best for the club, helping my teammates and winning here.

“That’s all I’m thinking about. What people say on social media is irrelevant.”

Manager Diego Simeone backed the player to remain on the red side of Madrid.

“Julian is an extraordinary player,” said Simeone. “He is committed to the team, he is committed to the club, he is giving his all, obviously, and we are delighted to have him with us.

“We have to take good care of him so that he stays with us for many years to come.”
