Nico Williams has ended speculation about his future by signing a contract extension with Athletic Club that will keep him at San Mames until 2035.

The club confirmed the new deal on Thursday, increasing his previous commitment by eight years.

The 22-year-old winger has been linked with a summer move to several top European clubs, including Barcelona and Bayern. But he has chosen to remain in Bilbao, citing loyalty and personal connection to the club.

“When it comes to making decisions, for me, what weighs most is the heart,” Williams said in a video released by Athletic. “I’m where I want to be, with my family. This is my home. Go Athletic Bilbao!”

The club also confirmed that Williams’ release clause has increased by more than 50%, although no official figure was disclosed. His previous clause was believed to be in the region of €60 million.

It is understood that the player was interested in a Barcelona move but had grown hesitant since the club’s financial issues meant they were unable to register him, even if they had managed to pay his release clause.

Williams joined Athletic’s youth system in 2013 and made his senior debut in 2021. He has since become a key figure in Ernesto Valverde’s side. The Spain international has made 167 appearances for the club, scoring 31 goals and playing a pivotal role in their 2024 Copa del Rey win and Champions League qualification last season.

His performances in the 2023-24 campaign, both domestically and internationally, raised his profile significantly. He was named Player of the Match in the Euro 2024 final, where he helped Spain lift the trophy, and later earned a nomination for the Ballon d’Or, finishing 15th in the voting.

Athletic’s renewal of Williams follows recent long-term extensions for Unai Simon, Oihan Sancet, Dani Vivian and others, as the club continues to invest in its core group of homegrown talent.
