Manager Eddie Howe says backline “looking vulnerable” in the defender’s absence

Newcastle United will be without Dan Burn for up to six weeks after the defender suffered a rib injury that affected his lungs during Sunday’s 1-0 Premier League defeat by Sunderland, Eddie Howe has confirmed.

Burn was taken to hospital after a heavy first-half collision with Nordi Mukiele and was withdrawn shortly before the interval. Howe said the 33-year-old was struggling to breathe and admitted the setback was a significant blow, given Burn’s recent form and importance to the side.

“It was a big blow for us because I think he’s been excellent in recent weeks,” Howe said. “It’s a rib problem and an issue with his lungs so we wish him well and it will be around four to six weeks out.”

The England international has been a near ever-present this season, starting 15 of Newcastle’s 16 league games and all six of their Champions League matches. His absence further stretches a defence already hit by injuries, with Howe conceding that the situation at the back is becoming increasingly difficult.

“The backline is an issue for us,” Howe said. “We have players out who all play in the same position. Our backline is looking vulnerable.”

Sven Botman remains unavailable with a back problem, while Emil Krafth and Kieran Trippier are also sidelined, with the new year a tentative target for their return. Howe added that Botman is making progress but is “not ready to play yet”.
