Magpies boss insists his side were denied a “clear” penalty after Chalobah fouled the winger
Newcastle United will ask the Premier League’s refereeing body for an explanation after Anthony Gordon was not awarded a penalty in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Eddie Howe has confirmed.
The incident came with Newcastle 2-1 ahead, when Gordon went to ground inside the area under pressure from Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah. Play was waved on and, minutes later, Joao Pedro scored to earn Chelsea a point.
Howe said the club has already contacted the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to understand why the decision went against them.
“We will be seeking clarification [from PGMOL] and those calls have already gone in, not from me personally but from the club,” Howe said. “We just want to know the thought process behind the decisions.”
The Newcastle manager was frustrated after the match and doubled down on his view that the referee had missed a clear infringement.
“I wouldn’t want to train them to deliver that kind of challenge in the box because you are going to give the referees a decision to make,” Howe said.
“I think one of the arts of defending is not to put yourself in that position. I thought, and I still do, it was a clear penalty. Having reviewed it, and I have not changed my mind.”
