Newcastle United are in talks with Southampton over a deal for Aaron Ramsdale as they continue their search for a new goalkeeper.

Nick Pope is still first choice when fit but he missed large parts of last season with injury.

Newcastle have proposed a loan move for Ramsdale, with an option to buy. Negotiations are ongoing and no agreement has been reached, but Southampton are understood to be open to a deal.

Ramsdale only joined Southampton from Arsenal last summer in a £25m deal and remains under contract until 2029.

However, the club finished bottom of the Premier League and got relegated. It is the third time Ramsdale has dropped down to the Championship with a club in his career.

The goalkeeper previously worked with Newcastle manager Eddie Howe during their time together at Bournemouth, and that relationship is thought to be a factor in Newcastle’s pursuit.

Newcastle had initially tried to sign James Trafford from Burnley, but Manchester City hijacked the deal. Trafford is now expected to return to his boyhood club, with a deal already agreed in principle.

Ramsdale made 32 appearances across all competitions for Southampton last season, keeping four clean sheets in a struggling side.

His form was solid despite the team’s struggles, and he remains a player with Premier League pedigree and international experience.
