Interest in Sesko gained urgency after Isak told Newcastle he wants to explore a move away this summer
Newcastle United are considering a move for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko should Alexander Isak leave the club this summer.
The club have been tracking him for some time and regard him as one of few available forwards capable of replacing Isak’s output, although any move for the Slovenia international could be complicated by Leipzig’s valuation.
Sesko signed a new contract with Leipzig just last month, extending his deal to 2029. That extension removed an earlier €65m release clause, but it is understood a verbal agreement exists between the player and the club that he can leave if a suitable offer emerges.
Newcastle’s interest has gained urgency after Isak told them he wants to explore his options away from the club. The Swedish forward did not join the squad for their pre-season tour, officially due to a minor injury, but sources close to the player suggest he requested not to travel due to uncertainty over his future.
Liverpool made an approach for Isak, but signed Hugo Ekitike after Newcastle insisted he was not for sale.
The possibility of Isak staying on Tyneside beyond this summer remains, but Newcastle could still push forward with a deal for Sesko anyway.
The club’s interest in a second striker predates uncertainty over Isak’s future. They made a €75m bid for Ekitike but the player ultimately chose Liverpool.
