Newcastle United are pushing to sign Brentford star Yoane Wissa for £50m after cooling their interest in Hugo Ekitike, with the Magpies prioritizing a new striker for the upcoming season.

Newcastle United has shifted its focus to signing Brentford star Yoane Wissa after cooling their interest in Hugo Ekitike.

The Magpies are looking to bolster their squad for the upcoming season, particularly in the striker position, after qualifying for the Champions League. With Callum Wilson’s exit on a free transfer, Eddie Howe has prioritized signing a new striker to strengthen the team’s attacking options.

Wissa, valued at £50m by Brentford, had a sensational season in the Premier League, netting 19 goals and becoming the Bees’ all-time top scorer in the division.

His impressive performances have attracted interest from several clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, who are also reportedly keen on signing the 28-year-old. Nottingham Forest recently had a bid rejected for Wissa’s services as they look to replace Anthony Elanga, who has joined Newcastle.

Newcastle are set to make a formal approach to Brentford over a deal for Wissa. Although there is currently no agreement with the player on personal terms, Champions League football and the prospect of a new challenge are likely to be attractive to Wissa. The player’s contract situation, with one year remaining plus an option for a further 12 months, may give Newcastle an advantage in negotiations.

Wissa’s versatility and goal-scoring ability make him an attractive prospect for Newcastle.

He can play as a lone striker or alongside another forward, providing flexibility in Eddie Howe’s tactics. With Ekitike now reportedly close to joining Liverpool, Newcastle’s pursuit of Wissa seems like a logical move to strengthen their attacking options.

The Magpies’ interest in Wissa is driven by the need for a prolific striker who can make an immediate impact. Wissa’s experience in the Premier League and his goal-scoring record make him an ideal candidate to fill the void left by Callum Wilson.

Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Wissa adds another layer of complexity to the transfer saga.

With Thomas Frank now in charge at Tottenham, Wissa may be tempted by the prospect of working with a manager who knows his abilities. However, Newcastle’s Champions League qualification and the player’s desire for a new challenge may give the Magpies an edge in the race.
