Manager Eddie Howe describes Dan Burn’s injury as “unfortunate” but hopes “he will be OK”
Newcastle defender Dan Burn has been hospitalised following a rib injury sustained during the Magpies’ 1-0 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.
The England international left the pitch shortly before half-time after struggling to breathe.
Burn collided with Sunderland defender Nordi Mukiele while contesting the ball and initially stayed on after treatment, but he was forced off in the 42nd minute as the knock worsened.
The severity of the injury became apparent at half time and Newcastle sent him to hospital for medical checks.
“He was struggling to breathe at half-time. It was a big problem,” manager Eddie Howe said. “Dan Burn has gone to the hospital for a check of his ribs, so hopefully he will be OK.
“Unfortunate for us, we’re losing players in one area of the pitch and our back line is stretched. We’ve got a number of absentees and so to lose another one in the colossal presence that Dan is, was a big one.
“I don’t know quite how serious it is. It looks like a rib problem. He’s gone to hospital to get them checked. But that was a big blow for us because Dan’s been an ever-present player.”
Burn has played in all of Newcastle’s Premier League and Champions League fixtures this season, barring one: the game against Manchester City in November that he missed due to suspension.
