Striker’s future not in manager’s hands, says Eddie Howe
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has dismissed claims that he promised Alexander Isak a move away from the club this summer.
Earlier this month, Isak accused the club of “broken promises” regarding his future, leading to speculation over a private agreement between Howe and the player that he could leave Tyneside if a replacement is secured.
But Howe responded on Friday that he “would never make a promise like that to any player” because he has no control over transfers.
Isak has not featured for Newcastle since the home defeat to Everton on the final day of last season, having refusing to train or play during pre-season and in the club’s two games of the new campaign.
Senior figures at Newcastle, including minority shareholder Jamie Reuben and representatives of the Saudi Public Investment Fund, attempted to repair relations during a meeting at the striker’s home earlier this week, but reports are that he turned down offers of a reconciliation.
Howe would not be drawn on whether he wanted Isak to go or stay, saying he had “a footballing preference” but could not determine what would happen.
“That’s for other people to decide,” said Howe. “I’m not in control of those discussions. I’m focusing on trying to bring new players into the team.”
Newcastle have finally taken a step towards addressing their striker issues, having agreed a deal worth around £70m with Stuttgart for forward Nick Woltemade.
The club are still targeting Brentford’s Yoane Wissa and Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen.
