Napoli began their Serie A title defense with a 2-0 victory over Sassuolo, thanks to goals from Scott McTominay and Kevin De Bruyne on his debut.

Napoli started their Serie A title defense on a high note, securing a 2-0 win over newly promoted Sassuolo.

The champions dominated the match, with Scott McTominay scoring the opening goal in the 17th minute as he headed in a cross from Matteo Politano.

Kevin De Bruyne made a stunning debut for Napoli, scoring a beautiful free-kick from the left flank that curled into the far corner of the net. The Belgian midfielder’s goal sealed the win for Napoli, and his performance was a promising start to his Serie A journey.

De Bruyne, 34, joined Napoli on a free transfer after spending 10 years with Manchester City.

McTominay continued his fine form, nearly doubling his tally before halftime with a powerful shot that hit the crossbar. The Scotland midfielder has been instrumental in Napoli’s success, scoring 12 goals in 34 league appearances last season and earning the Serie A MVP award.

Sassuolo struggled to create scoring opportunities and finished the match with 10 men after Ismael Kone was sent off in the 79th minute for a second bookable offense. Despite their numerical disadvantage, Napoli couldn’t capitalize on their chances to score more goals.

The win marks a strong start for Napoli’s title defense, and coach Antonio Conte’s team looks determined to make a statement this season. Napoli’s next match is against Cagliari Calcio on August 30, 2025.
