Julian Nagelsmann faces growing pressure to recall Manuel Neuer after his standout display for Bayern Munich against Real Madrid.

Manuel Neuer’s outstanding performance in Bayern Munich’s 2-1 Champions League quarter-final first-leg win over Real Madrid has reignited debate about a potential return to the national team ahead of the World Cup. The veteran goalkeeper produced nine saves to secure a crucial away victory.

The 40-year-old, who retired from international football in 2024, has remained on the radar of many German fans. Currently, Oliver Baumann is Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper, with Jonas Urbig and Alexander Nübel also in contention. Meanwhile, Marc-André ter Stegen is sidelined due to recurring injuries.

Neuer delivered a string of spectacular saves in Madrid, repeatedly denying Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior in one-on-one situations. His heroics protected Bayern’s slim lead and earned him the Player of the Match award.

German pundits were quick to praise the veteran, with many calling for his inclusion in the World Cup squad. Even Álvaro Arbeloa acknowledged Neuer’s influence, stating that the goalkeeper had been the most valuable player in the match.

Germany have historically relied on world-class goalkeepers, but the position has lacked consistency since Neuer’s retirement. With the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, calls for his return are growing louder following consecutive early exits in 2018 and 2022.

Attention has also turned to Neuer’s relationship with national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, which has appeared strained at times. Nagelsmann recently admitted he was unaware of Neuer’s 40th birthday and has previously ruled out persuading him to come out of retirement. When asked again about a possible return, Neuer downplayed the discussion, insisting his focus remains on Bayern. The goalkeeper said he did not want to talk about the national team and preferred to concentrate on club football while Bayern chase multiple titles.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl also praised Neuer’s performance, noting he has maintained this level throughout the season. While Eberl avoided commenting on national team matters, performances like this are likely to increase pressure on Nagelsmann ahead of the World Cup.
