Midfielder scored the second goal to complete his side’s comeback win at Selhurst Park
Mason Mount has made a confession about his goal for Manchester United against Crystal Palace.
United trailed 1-0 against Oliver Glasner’s side at the break, before scoring twice in nine minutes in the second half to complete a turnaround, with Mount scoring the second after Bruno Fernandes had laid the ball off for him during a freekick.
The 26-year-old’s goal was enough to seal a first victory at Selhurst Park since 2020 for United, and move them within touching distance of top four.
Mount confessed that he had not been expecting Fernandes’ pass and had been caught by surprise, and therefore needed to react quickly to get a reasonable shot away.
Mount said: “I said to him [Fernandes]: ‘I will roll it for you’. He said: ‘No, you stay there.’
“Then I said: ‘You shoot’ because the sun was causing a bit of a problem and I thought it would be difficult for Deano [Henderson] to see the ball. But he said: ‘Stay there’ and then rolled it to me. You could see my reaction was a bit: ‘Ah, get on the end of it’.”
Fernandes, who provided both the assists for United’s goals, said: “Mason is a great player. His quality was never in doubt with his team-mates. Sometimes he struggled a bit for goals and assists and also with injuries, but when he gets his fitness, he is important.”
The former Chelsea midfielder has struggled with injuries since switching to Old Trafford in 2023, but on Sunday he played a full 90 minutes for the first time as a United player.
After the game, Mount said: “The win was massive but also, for me, to play the full game. I haven’t done that in a while.
“I have been feeling really good recently, enjoying my football. When you have days like this in front of the fans it makes it all worth it.”
