Egypt national team director says 33-year-old would be “out of the spotlight” in USA

Mohamed Salah has been urged to remain in Europe when he leaves Liverpool at the end of the season because a move to Major League Soccer could see him fade from the spotlight.

Salah is yet to confirm his next destination as he prepares to bring an end to a nine-year spell at Liverpool, where he won two Premier League titles and the Champions League. MLS commissioner Don Garber has publicly stated his interest in bringing the 33-year-old to USA, although no formal moves for him have been confirmed.

Egypt’s national team director Ibrahim Hassan, however, believes the forward should prioritise staying at the highest level in Europe.

“I would prefer him to stay in Europe,” said Hassan. “I have heard about offers from Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and clubs in the Italian league. A move to MLS? He would be far too out of the spotlight. You won’t remember Salah any more than I remember [Lionel] Messi now – I don’t even try to watch him.”

Lionel Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 after leaving Barcelona and playing briefly for PSG, and has since become the club’s all-time top scorer.

Hassan added that the Saudi Pro League could be a viable alternative if Salah does not secure a move within Europe.

“If he does not receive offers from Europe, then a move to the Saudi league would be a good option, especially with big names such as Cristiano [Ronaldo],” said Hassan.

Salah has been linked with a move to several top Saudi Pro League sides but his representatives have made clear that even they do not know where he will be headed at the end of the season.
