Egpytian says “first part” of goodbye in a video on social media; official farewell to come in last home game at Anfield
Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool at the end of the season after spending nine years at the club.
The club confirmed in a statement that Salah wanted Liverpool fans to know as early as possible what his decision would be, out of respect for them and the club. This season, Salah has struggled to play at the level Liverpool supporters have become accustomed to over the past decade.
The Egyptian renewed his contract for two years last summer but has been heavily criticised this season due to his poor form. He was left out of the starting XI by manager Arne Slot for three games but hit back with a sensational interview where he accused the club of “throwing him under the bus”.
Matters have been resolved since, at least under the surface, and the player has largely returned to the starting XI since returning from international duty with Egypt, where he played in the Africa Cup of Nations. His form has remained average at best, although he rolled back the years with an impressive performance as Liverpool defeated Galatasaray this month to progress to the Champions League last eight.
Salah said in a video on X: “Hello everyone. Unfortunately, the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.
“I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life. Liverpool is not just a football club. It’s a passion, it’s a history, it’s a spirit. I can’t explain in words to anyone not of this club.
“We celebrated victory, we won the most important trophies and we fought together through the hardest time in our life. I want to thank everyone who was part of this club throughout my time here, especially the teammates past and present.
“And to the fans, I don’t have enough words. The support you showed me through the best time of my career, and you stood by me in the toughest times. It’s something I will never forget and something I will take with me always.
“Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will be always one of you. This club will always be my home, to me and to my family. Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone.”

Salah joined Liverpool from Roma in 2017 for £36.9m and was part of a group of players that immediately transformed the club to one of the best in Europe. Since then has scored 255 goals in 435 appearances as the club’s fortunes were restored under Jurgen Klopp and they won the Premier League, Champions League and other major trophies.
The Egyptian has won the Premier League golden boot four times and is currently third in the club’s all-time leading goalscorers chart, behind Ian Rush and Roger Hunt.
Liverpool said in a statement: “With plenty still left to play for this season, Salah is firmly focused on trying to achieve the best possible finish to the campaign for Liverpool and, therefore, the time to fully celebrate his legacy and achievements will follow later in the year when he bids farewell to Anfield.”
