After a promising start to his managerial tenure at Middlesbrough, Carrick was unable to maintain momentum
Former Manchester United player and interim manager Michael Carrick has parted ways with Championship side Middlesbrough, with the club confirming his dismissal following a second successive failure to reach the Championship play-offs.
Carrick had been in charge at the Riverside Stadium since 2022 but could not steer the team back into Premier League contention.
Leaving alongside the former Manchester United midfielder are assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick. A statement released by Middlesbrough on Wednesday read: “Middlesbrough Football Club has today parted company with head coach Michael Carrick. Michael’s assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick have also departed the club.
“We’d like to thank Michael, Jonathan and Graeme for all their hard work and unwavering commitment. We wish them all the very best for the future. The club will be making no further comment at this stage.”
After a promising start to his managerial tenure – guiding Middlesbrough to a fourth-place finish and a play-off semi-final in his first campaign – Carrick was unable to maintain momentum. Two consecutive seasons ending four points outside the play-offs, including a 10th-place finish in the just-concluded season, ultimately convinced the club that he was not the right man. Carrick’s Middlesbrough managed only one win in their final six games of the 2024-25 campaign.
