Midfielder has broken the club’s record for most assists in a Premier League season
Michael Carrick has said Bruno Fernandes is certainly not a player Manchester United would want to lose this summer despite the speculation over his future.
Fernandes once again demonstrated his value to United in Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford, delivering two assists in a performance that helped keep the club firmly in the race for a top-four finish.
The Portuguese playmaker had hinted late last year that he might consider leaving the club at the end of the season, having already rejected a lucrative offer from Al Hilal last summer.
Carrick said: “In terms of the club and moving forward, it’s difficult for me to get involved in too much of that. Bruno’s definitely not someone we’d want to lose, I can say that, but the summer and beyond that, it’s difficult for me to kind of go too far with that, but certainly, he’s important for us and he’s definitely not one we would want to lose.”
Fernandes’ first assist came from a pinpoint corner that allowed Casemiro to score the opening goal with a brilliant header. His second put Matheus Cunha through after Villa had equalised, allowing the Brazilian to net United’s second and keep them on top.
The two assists took Fernandes to 16 in the Premier League this season, surpassing the previous Manchester United record of 15 set by David Beckham in 2000.
