Real Madrid forward has been carrying the discomfort for several weeks and both club and country agreed that continuing with the squad was unnecessary
Kylian Mbappe has pulled out of France’s squad for their final World Cup qualifier due to an ankle problem, the French Football Federation confirmed on Friday.
The decision comes less than 24 hours after the 26-year-old scored twice and set up another in France’s 4-0 win over Ukraine, a result that secured their place at the 2026 World Cup.
His goals in Paris took him to 400 in his senior career, but he will not feature in Sunday’s trip to Azerbaijan.
According to the FFF, Mbappe “is still suffering from inflammation in his right ankle, which requires further examination” and he is set to undergo further medical tests in Madrid. The issue is not thought to be serious.
The forward has reportedly been carrying the discomfort for several weeks, and both Didier Deschamps and Real Madrid’s medical staff agreed that continuing with the squad was unnecessary.
Mbappe’s Real Madrid teammate Eduardo Camavinga has also left the France squad after suffering a minor hamstring strain. The midfielder did not play against Ukraine.
