Real Madrid No 9 begins light training after illness; Mbappe could play against Salzburg

Kylian Mbappe is back on his feet and training again after a serious case of gastroenteritis left him hospitalised earlier this week in Miami.

The French forward missed Real Madrid’s Club World Cup opener against Al-Hilal and will also sit out their next match against Pachuca.

Mbappe had missed training on Tuesday due to what was described as a fever. He then proceeded to miss Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against the Saudi Pro League side. After the match, Madrid manager Xabi Alonso was asked if Mbappe would be available for the next one and the Spaniard said “we don’t know, we’ll have to see how his recovery goes”.

Mbappe was then admitted to hospital later that evening when the medication he was initially given by Real Madrid’s medical team didn’t help. The club later confirmed his condition had worsened and medical staff chose to act quickly.

The player was discharged on Thursday and has since returned to the team’s hotel in Palm Beach. On Friday, Mbappe managed a light workout session, mostly stretching and light cardio, to slowly rebuild his strength after some weight loss and dehydration.

The France international has already been ruled out of the Pachuca game, but the club remain hopeful he can feature against Salzburg on 26 June.
