French forward has set a new record for the most goals scored in a debut season for Real Madrid

Real Madrid No 9 Kylian Mbappe has written his name in the club’s history books by setting a new record for the most goals scored in a debut season. The French forward netted a hat-trick in the dramatic 4-3 defeat to Barcelona at Montjuic on Sunday, bringing his total to 38 goals across all competitions.

This surpasses the previous record of 37 goals set by Ivan Zamorano during the 1992/93 season.

Mbappe’s remarkable tally includes 27 goals in La Liga, which has placed him at the top of the league’s scoring chart ahead of Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski. If he maintains this lead, he will become the first Real Madrid player since Karim Benzema in the 2021-22 season to win the Pichichi Trophy, and he will also have done it in his first season – a feat that not even Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, or Raul could achieve.

Despite his individual brilliance, Mbappe’s efforts were not enough to secure victory in the clásico. Real Madrid initially took a 2-0 lead, but Barcelona mounted a comeback with goals from Eric Garcia and Lamine Yamal, and then a brace from Raphinha. Mbappe completed his hat-trick in the second half, but Real Madrid ultimately fell short.

With three league matches remaining and the Club World Cup on the horizon, Mbappe has the opportunity to further extend his record. His current tally of 38 goals already surpasses the debut season totals of club legends such as Cristiano Ronaldo (33 goals in 2009/10) and Ronaldo de Lima (30 goals in 2002/03).
