France captain needs six goals to surpass Giroud’s record tally of 57

Kylian Mbappe has said he is confident of breaking Olivier Giroud’s France goal record “naturally”. The Real Madrid striker is edging closer to becoming his country’s all-time leading scorer.

The 26-year-old forward has netted 52 times in 92 caps. He needs to score five more to match, and six to surpass, Giroud’s record tally of 57.

“I think I’ll beat [Giroud], but when, I don’t know,” Mbappe said. “Maybe tomorrow, who knows? Maybe later. It’s something that will come naturally and I’ll move on from there.”

France play Azerbaijan in Paris in their World Cup qualifying match on Friday, before facing Iceland in Reykjavik on Monday.

However, Mbappe’s participation in both games remains uncertain as he is still recovering from a minor ankle sprain sustained during Real Madrid’s 3-1 win over Villarreal last weekend.

The France captain missed training earlier in the week but joined up with the squad on Wednesday. He is expected to take part in full training before coach Didier Deschamps makes a final decision on his involvement.

Regarding his participation, Mbappe said: “I want to play, the coach wants me to play. I feel good. I’ll train today and see how it goes, but I’m not worried.”
