Injury concerns around Madrid’s leading scorer piles further pressure on Xabi Alonso

Real Madrid could face Manchester City on Wednesday without Kylian Mbappe after the forward missed training on Tuesday.

Mbappe was absent from the morning session at Valdebebas, with club staff concerned about a muscular issue that will be assessed further before a final decision is made.

Test scheduled for later on Tuesday will determine whether he can be involved, according to ESPN.

The injury concerns around Madrid’s leading scorer piles further pressure on Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard’s position has already come under pressure following a run of poor results. After Madrid’s 2-0 defeat to Celta Vigo on Sunday they have now won only one game in five league matches.

Madrid’s senior figures held discussions over the manager’s future on Monday, and it is understood the outcome of the City game could be significant for Alonso’s future.

Mbappe’s form has been one of the few consistent positives for Madrid and Alonso. He has scored 25 goals in 21 appearances so far.

Alonso is also missing Eder Militao, Dean Huijsen, David Alaba, Dani Carvajal, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ferland Mendy and Eduardo Camavinga.
