Midfielder ready to revive career at Manchester United after being plagued with injuries for two years
Mason Mount is ready to bring his career back on track at Manchester United, after a difficult first two seasons where he has made just 19 starts.
The former Chelsea midfielder has been plagued by injuries since he signed for the red side of Manchester in 2023, but he insists he is now ready to start over as Ruben Amorim heads into his first full season as United head coach.
Mount’s best position in Amorim’s 3-4-3 system is the No 10 position, but the 26-year-old is not worried about his starting place despite the arrivals of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo this summer.
“I’ll always back myself,” said Mount. “I know what I can do. But we’re a team and we’re all working together in that. Obviously, with the new signings coming in, they’re going to elevate us to another level, and we all need to be at that level to really perform.”
Mount had a strong finish to last season. After returning from a hamstring injury that kept him out for three months, he scored two top-class goals in the Europa League semi-final against Athletic Club and earned a start in the final, although United ultimately lost to Tottenham.
“Getting back and feeling really, really good, playing some games and scoring some goals was obviously very important for me,” said Mount.
“Still, I want to kick on. Any time you do get that opportunity to be on the pitch, you want to do something, you want to affect the game. That’s always the way I’ve looked at it.”
Despite his injury record, Mount insists he is in good shape and ready to go after a carefully managed fitness programme in the last few months.
“When you’ve had small setbacks, it’s about how you correct that and how you push on,” said the 26-year-old. “We’ve looked at why. It’s behind me now. I feel we’re in a really, really good place going into this season.”
Last season’s 15th-place finish was United’s lowest ever in the Premier League, and Amorim has been tasked with rebuilding the team as he heads into his first full season. Mount is a Champions League winner with Chelsea and he knows what the standards should be at the club.
“Last season wasn’t good enough,” said Mount. “We know that, but we’re ready to put that wrong right.
“We obviously want to be back in Europe. I think that is a massive, massive thing for the club. Europe, that’s the focus.
“The Champions League would be amazing for us. As a group, we want to be playing in that competition.”
