Ex-Manchester United forward joined Marseille in a deal worth up to €31m last summer
Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood made a strong statement in Marseille’s first pre-season outing, scoring a first-half hat-trick in a 5-0 win over Dutch third-tier side Excelsior Maassluis on Wednesday.
The 23-year-old forward, now entering his second season in France, struck three times in just 11 minutes before half-time to start pre-season on a highly positive note.
Greenwood had a standout campaign in Ligue 1 last season, where he scored 21 goals in 34 appearances to tie Ousmane Dembele at the top of the scoring charts.
The Frenchman won the golden boot award due to having more non-penalty goals but the performance showed what Greenwood is capable of.
Greenwood left United and joined Marseille on a permanent basis in a deal worth up to €31m last summer, following a year on loan at Getafe.
United inserted a significant sell-on clause during the player’s sale, which would allow the club to bring in between 40-50% of any profits from a sale.
There has been some interest in Greenwood’s services from other clubs this summer, although it is not yet clear whether Marseille intend to cash in or hold on to their star man.
