Palace captain set to depart at end of season with Liverpool and Real Madrid among clubs interested
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has confirmed that club captain Marc Guehi has informed the hierarchy he will not sign a new contract and intends to leave at the end of the season.
The England international’s current deal runs out next summer, and despite multiple attempts by the club to tie him down to fresh terms, Guehi has decided to seek a new challenge away from Selhurst Park.
“I think Marc has already told us that he doesn’t sign a new contract, so he will leave next year,” said Glasner.
“The club wanted [him to stay]. They offered Marc a new contract. But he said: ‘No, I want to make something different’.
“And that’s normal. And for us, it’s how we can deal with this situation? [What] is the best way to get this next step done? And that’s all about how we are talking together.”
The 25-year-old was close to joining Liverpool in the summer before the move collapsed just hours before the transfer deadline.
The late collapse reportedly frustrated the defender, although it is not the reason he is refusing to sign a new contract. He has always maintained that he wants this season to be his last at Selhurst Park.
Now Palace will have to choose between selling him in January or letting him leave as a free agent in January. Liverpool are not the only club with interest in the centre-back, or the need to fill the position. La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona are also monitoring the situation.
Guehi is one of the highest rated defenders in the Premier League. He has performed at a high level for Palace and captained the side as they lifted their first major trophy, the FA Cup, in May.
