Goalkeeper will miss pre-season tour and potentially the opening fixtures of the Premier League with a hamstring injury
Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana will miss six to eight weeks of action after the Cameroonian suffered a hamstring injury during the opening week of pre-season training.
The 29-year-old sustained the setback shortly after returning to Carrington and has been ruled out of the club’s upcoming tour, which includes a friendly against Leeds in Sweden and three matches in the United States against West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton.
While United hope for a speedy recovery, it is unlikely that the goalkeeper will recover in time for their opening Premier League fixtures, which means that the club will be considering their options between the sticks.
Altay Bayindir, Tom Heaton and Radek Vitek are United’s other goalkeepers, but Bayindir’s future at the club is in doubt after questionable performances last season, Heaton is 39 and Vitek is a youth goalkeeper still unproven at the highest level. The coaching staff might feel that additional cover is highly required.
Monaco were reportedly interested in Onana earlier in the window, though no formal offer was tabled. A move is now extremely unlikely given the goalkeeper’s injury.
