Netherlands boss says the defender is now more confident in his actions
Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt has been recalled to the Netherlands squad by manager Ronald Koeman for this month’s World Cup qualifiers.
De Ligt was left out of October’s international window but has forced his way back into contention following a string of strong performances for United, including a late equaliser in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur. The centre-back replaces Inter Milan’s Stefan de Vrij, who has been dropped.
The Netherlands are currently three points clear at the top of their qualifying group. They face Poland in Warsaw on Friday before hosting Lithuania in Amsterdam on Monday. Victory in either match would guarantee their place at next year’s finals.
Koeman explained De Ligt’s selection: “Partly, it is based on playing time, although Nathan Ake isn’t playing 50 per cent of the matches at Manchester City, but he’s part of this squad.
“You decide separately for each player in the squad. I felt I should select Matthijs based on what he’s showing.”
Koeman revealed he had spoken with De Ligt earlier in the season about his confidence.
“He’s been through a difficult period,” said the Netherlands coach. “I’ve spoken to him and told him he didn’t look confident in his actions, but now that’s much better. And his position at the club and the club’s performance will always be important.”
