Manchester United 2-0 West Ham: Amorim questions future after shambolic display at Old Trafford

Manchester United’s dismal Premier League campaign continued as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to West Ham United at Old Trafford on Sunday. Goals from Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen secured the win for the Hammers, who had not won in their previous eight league matches.

The loss extends United’s winless streak to seven games, equalling their worst run in the Premier League since 1992. This sequence includes an incredible five defeats that have left them only better than fellow-beleaguered side Tottenham Hotspur out of all teams not relegated this season.

Adding to United’s woes, defender Leny Yoro sustained a foot injury during the match, which means there are now doubts over his availability for the upcoming Europa League final against Spurs on 21 May. Luke Shaw was also replaced in the game, but as more of a precautionary measure.

In the aftermath of the defeat, Amorim openly questioned his future at the club, saying that if the lack of urgency and mental toughness continues into next season he might not deserve a job.

“I’m talking about myself, I’m talking about the culture in the club and the culture in the team,” said Amorim.

“We need to be really strong in the summer and be brave. We will not have a next season like this if we start like this. If the feeling is still here we should give places [his position] to different persons.”

United have two Premier League games remaining before facing Tottenham in the Europa League final. The club will be looking to end the season on a positive note and secure European silverware to salvage an otherwise disappointing campaign.
