Club intend to wait until the summer before strengthening key positions
Manchester United are not planning to make signings in the January transfer window even though they will lose key players to the Africa Cup of Nations.
Sources at Old Trafford said the club does not intend to react when Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui set out for their national teams. Afcon will be played in December and January and the winter transfer window provides an opportunity for reinforcements.
United manager Ruben Amorim admitted the situation could still change depending on opportunities that arise during the window.
“Let’s see when the window is open, if we can improve the team and try to prepare something that happened,” Amorim said. “Until then, we have to take the chance.”
One area where United lacks suitable personnel is the midfield position, but the club will wait until the summer before making signings, due to the difficulty of concluding deals in the January windows.
Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton are among the players United have been tracking. Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller is also being assessed as a potential option.
