Financial breathing room has freed Manchester United to pursue a “disciplined investment” strategy this summer

Manchester United have confirmed that they are still in line with both the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and UEFA’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.

Some observers have wondered how the club can afford significant spending on players given PSR and the club’s 15th-place finish last season, which led to missing out on European football. It is estimated that missing out on the Champions League alone after the loss to Tottenham in Bilbao cost the club at least £70 million.

Minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe also gave financial warnings earlier in 2025, suggesting the club was on track to run out of money by year’s end.

However, in their financial report for the third quarter of this year (Q3), United revealed a 17.4% increase in revenue, largely thanks to additional Europa League fixtures and a £20 million drop in wages.

The club saw some players such as Marcus Rashford and Antony exit the club temporarily in January. They also made significant staff cuts. Around 250 non-playing staff were made redundant in the past year as part of a restructuring process.

CEO Omar Berrada has given more optimistic news in the club’s latest report. Berrada revealed that United’s revenue is expected to reach between £660m and £670m by June 2025. That would mark a return to pre-pandemic levels.

This financial breathing room has freed United to pursue what insiders told Manchester Evening News was a “disciplined investment” strategy this summer.

The club are targeting signings that can instantly improve Ruben Amorim’s squad. With Premier-League proven Matheus Cunha already acquired, the club are also close to a deal with Brentford for forward Bryan Mbeumo.

The acquisition of both players, likely to occupy the two No 10 roles in Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, is not expected to halt United’s additions to the forward line. The club are also seeking an additional No 9, with Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres high on the wishlist, according to Sky Sports News.

However, no formal approach has been made for the player.

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho are all expected to leave the club, which will also further help United to maintain compliance with financial regulations while trimming down a bloated squad and getting rid of discontented players.
