Michael Carrick says clarity on Brazilian’s future “easier” for everyone

Leny Yoro has revealed that the squad at Manchester United were eager for Casemiro to extend his stay at Old Trafford.

Both the club and Casemiro have announced that the Brazilian will be departing when his contract runs out at the end of the season but his future became a talking point again after Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Aston Villa, when he found the net and supporters inside Old Trafford serenaded him with chants of “one more year”.

Despite the affection from the stands and within the dressing room, the expectation remains that the 34-year-old will leave this summer. According to reports, a change of heart is unlikely even though the club technically retains the option to activate a one-year extension in his contract.

Speaking after the match, young defender Leny Yoro admitted the players had hoped the experienced midfielder would remain.

“Everyone wanted him to stay, he’s a player [who is] really important for us,” Yoro said. “Even in the dressing room, every day, he has the experience that no one else has in the team.

“He won everything, so this helped us a lot in the games and even outside the pitch.”

Casemiro’s impending exit was mutually agreed with the club, and while he has played an important role in the team’s recent improvement under head coach Michael Carrick, the United boss suggested the decision is unlikely to be revisited.

“I think it’s when something’s decided and in some ways the fact that it was decided makes things a little bit easier and everyone understands the situation really,” Carrick said.

“I think the impact he’s had has been terrific, certainly since I’ve been here and working with him and his influence within the team and big moments and goals.”

Casemiro joined Manchester United in 2022 and has won the League Cup and the FA Cup with the club.
