Amorim’s words have created doubt over his future at the club and the hierarchy wants to be assured of his long-term commitment
Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is ready to back manager Ruben Amorim in the upcoming summer transfer window, but only if he gets a firm commitment that Amorim will stay at the club and see through the project he has been brought in to lead.
Ratcliffe and INEOS are reportedly growing uneasy about what they perceive as mixed signals from the Portuguese coach, whose public comments have raised doubts over his long-term intentions at Old Trafford, according to The Sun.
Having spent six months at the club, Amorim is under contract for at least another two years, and United’s leadership wants full reassurance that he is prepared to stay the course, particularly after a season that is statistically among the worst in the club’s modern history.
United are currently languishing in 16th place under Amorim, having lost 18 games so far, and have failed to put together back-to-back wins in the Premier League.
Speaking to the media last week, Amorim said: “It’s a decisive moment in the history of the club. We need to be really strong in the summer and to be brave because we will not have a next season like this.
“If we start like this, if the feeling is still here, we should give the space to different people.”
The comment was widely interpreted as a hint that he would walk away if results don’t meet expectations next season. Amorim later attempted to clarify his remarks ahead of United’s match against Chelsea:
“What I am saying is, we need to perform in the future and this season. If not, they will change us, that is a normal thing. That was my feeling and is still my feeling today.”
