United officials plan to request a discussion with PGMOL chief Howard Webb on what they see as a run of inconsistent and costly officiating
Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has said Manchester United’s complaints about the standard of refereeing could “create problems” in the league.
United are reportedly preparing to meet with the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) over a series of controversial refereeing decisions that have frustrated the club this season.
Officials plan to request a discussion with PGMOL chief Howard Webb in the new year after what they see as a run of inconsistent and costly officiating, according to the Daily Mail.
Recent incidents that have drawn attention include Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo appearing to grab Diogo Dalot’s neck without punishment and Casemiro being sent off for what United consider a rather soft foul against Chelsea.
Clattenburg told reporters that the club’s complaints would only do more harm than good in the league.
“All clubs are having issues with referees’ decisions, and they know each place they move up the Premier League is worth over £1m,” Clattenburg said.
“The league this season is as tight as it’s ever been, and each win can move many places. When one of the biggest clubs complains about the standard of refereeing, this will create problems in the Premier League and PGMOL.”
