Manchester United are not planning to make any transfers in January, despite being aware that they need options in midfield.

United confirmed on Tuesday that Michael Carrick will take charge of the team until the end of the season, and there was talk that the club were considering bringing in a midfield player, either Al-Hilal’s Ruben Neves or Atletico Madrid’s Marcos Llorente.

However, it is now understood that the club believe Carrick has a good enough squad to secure European football with 17 games left to play. United are currently in eighth place in the table, but only three points off the top four and not currently playing in any other competition than the Premier League.

Two of the club’s Africa Cup of Nations contingent, Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo, have also returned to Manchester after their national teams were knocked out of the competition, meaning that United have received a massive boost in attack. The duo will be available to play against Manchester City on Saturday.

Full-back Noussair Mazraoui, who may suddenly become a top choice at right-back with United almost certain to revert to four at the back under Carrick, is still at Afcon with Morocco but the tournament is set to be concluded on Sunday. Defender Matthijs de Ligt is still injured.
