No official contact has been made between Manchester United and Sporting for Gyokeres; Hojlund expected to stay

Manchester United are still in pursuit of a new central striker this summer despite their moves for Matheus Cunha and Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo.

Both United’s transfer department and head coach Ruben Amorim are keen on reinforcing the focal point of attack, with Sporting Lisbon forward Viktor Gyokeres high on their list, according to Sky Sports. Amorim previously coached the Swedish international at Sporting and remains an admirer of the 26-year-old.

No official contact has been made between United and Sporting. Reports in Portugal claim Gyokeres is open to leaving but would prefer a move to a club playing in the Champions League next season. However, the size of United and their pace and decisiveness in rebuilding the squad in the current window could still be a major factor in convincing the player to come to Old Trafford.

In another development, the club have continued talks with Brentford over Mbeumo, whose strong desire to move to Old Trafford has impressed club officials. United’s opening offer valued at up to £55 million was rejected this week but the club are preparing a new bid for the Cameroon international.

Striker Rasmus Hojlund is expected to stay, with the search for a new striker not regarded internally as a death knell for his time at the club. There has been interest in the striker overseas, but it is understood that United will only consider a sale if the player himself pushes for a move.
