Red Devils eager to use the victory as a base to build some consistency

Bruno Fernandes has said Manchester United had a little help from the home crowd at Anfield as they beat Liverpool at their ground for the first time since 2016.

United took an early lead from Bryan Mbeumo before a late Harry Maguire header ended Liverpool’s comeback ideas and secured a 2-1 win.

Fernandes said that frustration from the home fans after his side’s early goal helped them keep their hold on the game.

“In the first 10 minutes we knew they would try to start the game very strong,” said Fernandes.

“Also in the first half, we understood that they were under pressure when they had time on the ball. The fans were putting them in a difficult position and booing for them to play quicker.

“We wanted to slow their game and we knew that would give massive spaces around the middle.”

The win marks the first time Amorim has secured successive Premier League victories as United boss, after nearly a year on the job.

United’s late hero Harry Maguire said: “It’s embarrassing really. It’s not a stat that we should even be speaking about, because it is an embarrassing stat to have.”

The defender backed his side to use the victory as a springboard to win more games.

“Let’s try and make it three on Saturday against Brighton, because we have to start putting a bit more consistency together,” Maguire said.

“The last three or four years we’d put in a performance like this and the following game we come down again.

“We have set a benchmark. Great fight, big win, but we have to go again.”
