Transfer was held up by negotiations over Antony’s salary but the issue has now been resolved

Manchester United winger Antony will join Real Betis permanently this summer after the two clubs agreed a deal worth €25m.

The move ends the Brazilian’s difficult spell at Old Trafford, three years after he joined from Ajax for €95m in what was then the club’s second-most expensive signing.

United will also retain a 50 per cent sell-on clause, ensuring they share in any profit Betis make on a future transfer.

The transfer was agreed last week but held up by negotiations over Antony’s salary. The Brazilian had two years left on his contract at United and wanted compensation for the significant pay cut he would take to join Betis.

However, the Spanish were unwilling to pay any more than they had already offered and indeed went ahead to provisionally withdraw their offer.

The issue has now been resolved. No further payments will be made to the player and he will join Betis.

Antony spent the second half of last season on loan in Seville, where he revived his form under Manuel Pellegrini. He scored nine goals and registered five assists in 26 matches, helping Betis reach the Conference League final before a heavy defeat to Chelsea.

The loan spell convinced the Spanish side to push for a permanent deal throughout the summer. The player himself also felt rejuvenated in Spain and wanted to stay, despite interest from Saudi Arabia.
