Delap has attracted interest from several top clubs besides United, including Chelsea and Newcastle
Manchester United have made their intentions of activating Liam Delap’s £30 million release clause known to Ipswich Town and have a framework in place for how the deal will be done, with the final decision now resting on the player.
The club have spoken to the player’s representatives and reached an understanding related to personal terms, according to ESPN. The deal is therefore expected to proceed very quickly once the 22-year-old makes up his mind.
Delap, who netted 12 goals in 36 Premier League appearances during his debut season at Portman Road, has attracted interest from several top clubs, including Chelsea and Newcastle United. However, United have been proactive and will conclude a deal if there is any to be done.
Last week, Ipswich Town granted the striker permission to travel and speak to other clubs, and the player had a meeting with United’s executives in Manchester.
Delap’s release clause, initially set at £40 million, dropped to £30 million following Ipswich’s relegation from the Premier League. This low price has intensified competition among clubs who want to bolster their attacking options going into next season.
United legend and pundit Roy Keane said the club need to sign players with proven Premier League experience.
“We go back to recruitment. They certainly need to get players in who know the Premier League,” said Keane. “I think the majority of signings over the past two or three years are players who have never played in the Premier League and they’ve struggled to adapt.”
Amorim and the club appear to hold this perspective as well, as they have already concluded a deal to bring highly-rated Wolves forward Matheus Cunha to Old Trafford this summer for £62.5 million. The club are also reportedly interested in Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, although the £50 million-pound fee might make it difficult for United to conclude a deal due to their ongoing financial challenges, which were worsened by missing out completely on any European competition next season.
Delap will consider his options carefully and make a choice as to which club to play for next season.
